Fall Landscaping Tasks Checklist:
Here are a few of the main fall landscaping tasks you need to complete before winter to help ensure that your plants and landscaping has a smooth seasonal transition.
When the seasons begin to change, the leaves start falling from the trees, the grass goes dormant, and perennials turn brown. This is a great time to start with your fall clean up and annual color refreshing.
Here are a few things you need to do around your property in the fall.
Fall Landscaping Tasks Checklist:
- Clean your flower beds, planting beds, gardens, and planters of expired plants and flowers. Pull all warm season flowers, vegetable plants, and landscape plants which have turned brown or are turning brown.
- Trim shrubs, ornamentals, and garden plants which can be pruned at this time of year.
- Do leaf clean up to help the landacaping grass and plants. Leaf clean up also helps your property look well kept even when it’s cold.
- Transplant any shrubs, perennials, and veggies during this time. Now is a great time to transplant as the leaf growth is slowing down for most plants and the roots can develop.
- Plant seasonal color flowers, perennials, vegetables, and herbs.
- Install mulch in your flower beds, garden areas, and containers. The mulch helps hold moisture in the soil, which reduces the amout of water and irrigation needed. Mulch also helps control weeds by putting a barrier between the soil and the elements.
- Aerate your lawn grass and turf areas. This helps the grass grow strong roots and will greatly improve the health of your lawn next spring.
- Fertilize feed your grass, trees, and landscape plants. Give your plants a good dose of nutrients. Feeding your plants in the fall helps strong growth next season. Be careful not to use fertilizer that is too high in N, as it will encourage new leaf growth. We don’t want the new leaves to freeze.
- Winterize irrigation sprinklers.
- Wrap and protect temperature sensitive plants.
This is a consolidated brief checklist. There are more things to do in fall, but this list should help you.
